How we became Beagles lovers

Martin & I came to love Beagles purely by accident. We were looking for a dog, didn't know what breed, but it had to not be too big due to size of home. We are great 'Trekkies', and for those of you who don't know, The newest series of Star Trek - Enterprise, has a beagle as the captain's pet. Well, we had found our dog.

Merlin came to us in July'02 from Georgina Kemp and the Timamso Kennel. Such a joy, I never knew dogs could be so funny. To this day he is the 'Joker' of the pack. Thanks Georgina, you picked us a lovely dog. After a couple of months we felt sorry for him and decided to get him a playmate. Enter Sienna in November'02, also from Georgina. Both very happy little beagles, our family was complete. Or so we thought !!!

Early in 2004, we moved house so that we had a bigger garden to make a safe and secure run for the dogs, and for others that we hoped to breed in the future. My old tom cat Tiptoes died at the age of 17 in April. Having never been without cats, I found it very hard and so in August we found our new little boy, Oscar, at the RSPCA centre in South Godstone.

Oscar is completely white with lovely blue eyes and is not deaf. He has such a character that he lets the dogs chase him for so long, then turns and chases them when he's had enough. I think he's a bit confused though and thinks he's a dog as he sits and asks for treats along with them !!!!

Merlin was our first attempt at showing, and although he had quite a few 1st and 2nd's, he never took to it too well, one judge actually referred to him as a Hooligan, but lovable !! It was partly our fault for lack of knowledge in training and partly the fact that he hates Judges touching him. After a lot of thought and advice from Georgina Kemp (Timamso), and Serena Parker (Serenaker), we stopped showing him and concentrated our efforts on Sienna who was our little star. She loved showing with either of us and was so good in the show ring, and was consistently placed in classes. Qualifying for Crufts at 11months.

Sienna is  6.5yrs old now and has been a wonderful foundation for our breeding program. She is a wonderfully natural mother and 'Boss' of the pack. She has produced some lovely puppies of whom we still have two bitches for our future.

In May '06 we added Arthur to our small kennel, and in March '08 mated him with Sienna, this produced a litter of 6 beautiful pups. We have kept Lily from this litter. A beautiful tan/white bitch who has such a sweet nature, but like her mum, rules the roost !
